Second baseman

Right-handed batter

20-years-old

The Yankees have made a habit recently of not letting height get in the way of signing guys with talent. Keiner Delgado, Abrahan Ramirez, and Jared Serna are all players are the shorter side and the Yankees are giving them every opportunity. Jared Serna has so far demonstrated that his height bears no importance on the quality of his game and the numbers he can put up.

In 2021, Serna’s first season, his numbers were good but not great in the DSL. He hit .238/.404/.384/.788 with three homers, nine doubles, and two triples with 24 SB. Not the best numbers, but when combined with his mature approach, patience, hit tool, and defensive capabilities at second base it was enough to get him a promotion to the FCL in 2022.

That’s when he really took off. He hit .302/.438/.527/.965 with six homeruns, nine doubles and a triple in 37 FCL games. He also stole 16 bases, earning himself a promotion to Low-A late in the season. He struggled in Low-A, which hurt his overall numbers. Serna still finished with a .274 average and a .855 OPS on the year.

Still just 20-years-old, Serna has plenty of time to prove that 2022 was not a fluke. He has the tools necessary to succeed all the way up the ladder. He is a 70 on the scouting scale in speed and has surprising pop for a guy his size. His hit tool is well above average, and he has a patient approach at the plate leading to a high on base percentage. The arm is more than adequate to continue manning second base in the near and long term.

Serna began 2023 in Low-A, where he finished off. He is off to a blistering start to the season, with a .377/.473/.558/1.03 including two homeruns, six doubles and a triple. He has seven SB and just 7 K : 13 BB in 21 games so far this season. Serna appears to be in the midst of a breakout season and could be promoted to High-A by midseason. After a relatively slow start, he has been scorching hot recently. In his last 11 games, he's hit .667/.707/1.03/1.737 with two homeruns, four doubles and a triple.

What Serna lacks in size he more than makes up for in athleticism and fire. With his maturity, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him move quickly through the system. Fans will enjoy watching him go about his business and play the game hard.

Serna is just silly hot right now. Another thing I love about him is the bat to ball skills, aability to barrel the ball and with the exception of Tampa last yr in a small sample size, he's walked more than he's K'd at every level

    1. Anyone his size has an uphill climb but Serna has some tools too. Looking forward to seeing how he finishes and what his performance looks like in High-A.
