Breakout Bombers: Carlos Lagrange

6-foot-7

195-pounds

Right-handed starting pitcher

19-years-old

Signed: February 3rd, 2022 out of the Dominican Republic

In his first year as a professional, Carlos Lagrange impressed. He spent the whole season in the DSL, where he had a 3.00 ERA and 43 K : 19 BB in 33 innings pitched. Batters hit just .094 against him. He signed with little fanfare, but is quickly making a name for himself.

Lagrange sports a fastball that has already hit 100 mph. I saw a video of him hitting 99.7 on the rhapsodo so that checks out. There’s also a video of him pitching in the DSL in August of 2022 during which he appears to feature a 4-seam fastball, 2-seam fastball, slider, and curveball. All of these pitches got swings and misses during this start. The fastball is plus by virtue of velocity, the 2-seam appears to have good tailing action, the curveball has nice downward motion, and the slider looks like it is inconsistent with movement but he mixed in a couple of them that were plus.

Lagrange is another exciting pitcher in the low minors among a growing list of high ceiling special arms. He certainly has a long way to go in his development, but has a few things working in his favor. 2023 could be a breakout season for him. He should start in the FCL, and we could see him move up to Low-A towards the end of the season like Sean Hermann last year. He should be on tap for 50-60 innings.

The ceiling, as one would imagine from a player of his size and with his velocity, is immense. The floor is of course a complete flameout given how young he is and how far he has to go. A realistic expectation for a prospect like him in the Yankees’ system would be that he becomes a late inning reliever. With his stuff and size, however, the sky is the limit.

The 6-foot-7 monster could be a breakout bomber in 2023. He represents yet another high-end arm in the low minors which now seem to grow on trees, from seeds that were planted by the gas station and the strength and conditioning crew.
